About

My name is David Butler, I am a New England based photographer who is in continuous search of the quiet beauty that exists in the ordinary.

As an artist that has always struggled with holding focus and attention in a world full of endless distractions, I use the camera as both an excuse to escape and wonder with my un-obstructed thoughts, and also a tool to slow down time and muffle some of the noise, allowing the simple beauty of the world to reveal itself.

For me, photography has never been about documenting a subject as it is, but rather how I see and the feeling I am trying to capture. It is not the decisive moment that matters most for me, but rather the decisive composition, shutter speed and quality of light.

I will often rely on longer shutter speeds in my images to smooth out the motion, and allow for just the essentials to sift through the exposure, allowing for a reductive composition to develop. What I leave out of the frame is as important as what I include.

Ultimately, the print process is where a successful photoshoot turns into one with great meaning that can be shared with the world. Whether I am personally hand printing in the studio or working closely with some of the best print labs, seeing the final images framed and hung on the wall provides me with a great sense of pride, joy, and accomplishment. An image that is beautifully printed, framed, and hung in the correct space is ultimately way my work is intended to be best experienced.
